Stan returns from the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

You didn’t have to be an athlete to take part in the Olympic Games!

Stan Lippeatt (Musical Advisor to the band) had been invited to perform with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band on the opening night of the Olympic Games. The band was one of several ensembles playing the music accompanying the stunning scene “Pandemonium”. Stan spent many of his playing years with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band but this was definitely a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience for him and the band.

‘Isles of Wonder’ was a journey through the history of the UK and surely it was no coincidence that something as truly British as the Brass Band was included in this ceremony and that it was Grimethorpe, a band from a mining background, who were chosen to do the honour in ‘Pandemonium’ as this represented the beginning of the Industrial Revolution started in 1709 by Abraham Darby using coal to smelt iron in a small blast furnace.

Let’s hope the spectacle of the ceremonies and in particular the music heard also inspires future generations to become musicians.
